The Tortoise Shell Day Parade

The Tortoise Shell Day Parade by Jayme MacAllister is a warm and thoughtful children’s story about self-expression, individuality, and friendship.

The book follows Antonio, a young tortoise whose class is preparing for “Shell Day Parade,” where every student decorates their shell to reflect what they love. While his classmates eagerly share ideas—suns, flowers, stars, and waves—Antonio struggles to decide what his own design should be. He wants to please everyone but doesn’t want to upset any of his friends by choosing one idea over another.

When Antonio talks to his wise Grandpa Dometry, he learns an important lesson about being true to himself. Grandpa helps him realize that he doesn’t have to choose just one thing—or copy anyone else. Each tortoise’s shell can reflect their own joys and experiences. Inspired, Antonio designs a shell that includes all the things he loves—anchored by a big bright fish, representing his favorite pastime, fishing with Grandpa.

At the parade, Antonio’s shell amazes his friends, and together they see that their differences make the day—and their friendship—more colorful and special.

The story beautifully combines a simple narrative with a powerful message: happiness comes from embracing who you are while appreciating what makes others unique.
